Scorpions are a reality for homeowners here in Oklahoma City. These stinging pests aren’t out to get you, but they can feel that way if you put your foot in your shoe and get a nasty surprise! Scorpions often wander in from outside and wind up in unpleasant places inside your home. Any clutter or furniture can provide a hiding spot for these predators, so it’s essential to include them in your Oklahoma City pest control plan. Below, we’ll talk all about scorpions and what you can do to keep them from your OKC home.

Do Scorpions Make Any Sound?

Not every type of scorpion makes sounds, but a few species can hiss by rubbing their first two pairs of legs and their pedipalps together, similar to how crickets do. This creates a defensive hissing sound that warns potential threats to stay away. However, most scorpion species do not make any noise, and the only native species in our area – the striped bark scorpion – is silent.

Do Scorpions Make Nests?

Scorpions are primarily solitary animals. They do not live in large groups and avoid nesting together. Unlike spiders, scorpions don’t build their own nests. They find hidden spots to conceal themselves, and they prefer to hide alone. If you see multiple scorpions in the same place, this is likely due to unfavorable circumstances like a lack of safe nesting sites.

Scorpions also don’t need to build sites to lay eggs because they give live birth. The fertilized eggs develop and hatch inside the mother’s body. The hatchlings expel from the egg fully developed. They crawl onto their mother’s back and remain there for up to three weeks until their exoskeletons become rigid. At this point, baby scorpions can hunt, sting, and fend for themselves.

Signs Of A Scorpion Infestation

Scorpions in Oklahoma don’t destroy property and don’t make a lot of noise or mess. So you might not see many signs that they’re around. Of course, if you start seeing individual scorpions crawling around, that’s a big sign you have an infestation. Scorpions like to hide so that you won’t see them all the time. But if you start seeing scorpions dashing the area under your couch to the site under your T.V. stand regularly, it’s a good bet you have them. If you see signs of scorpion prey (think crawling insects), it’s good to assume some scorpions are crawling around.

What Is The Best Way To Get Rid Of Scorpions?

The best way to get rid of different types of scorpions is to not get them in the first place. This means taking pest prevention measures like:

  • Getting rid of scorpion prey items
  • Decluttering to eliminate scorpion hiding places
  • Removing potential water sources
  • Sealing cracks and holes in your home’s exterior
  • Clearing away woodpiles and debris from around your home

Taking these scorpion control measures can help ensure you don’t wind up with a breeding scorpion population around your home. This is especially true when it comes to preventing scorpion prey. Like spiders, scorpions don’t have much reason to go into our homes unless they’re infested with their prey.
